Your Retirement Plan
What Should I Include In My Retirement Plan?
Mention retirement planning and most people think in terms of financial planning, but there is a great deal more to planning
for your retirement than simply financial planning. Don't get me wrong, money is certainly extremely important, but it is only one of many things
that you need to think about. The first and perhaps most important question to ask yourself is just what you plan to do with your time. The
possibilities here are endless but you need to take your time and think about this particular question very carefully. Retirement may well be the
end of your working life but it is also the start of the next phase in your life and one which will hopefully be both long and enjoyable.
We all have dreams about things that we want to do or achieve in our lives and retirement often provides the perfect opportunity
to turn these dreams into reality. Now there is nothing wrong with simply pottering in the garden or wandering around the golf course all
day long if that's what you want to do but twenty, or hopefully more, years of retirement is a long time to spend in the garden or on the
golf course. So, if you have a dream or a burning desire to do something then now is the time to start thinking seriously about how you can
turn your dream into reality and add it into your retirement plan. For many people retirement comes too soon and they're simply not ready to
give up work. If you fall into this category then why not think about continuing to work. There are probably numerous opportunities open to
you for a second career after retirement and, if you can't locate suitable paid employment, then there will certainly be a host of voluntary
organizations which would be more than happy to make use of your skill and experience. You also need to start thinking seriously about your
health as you approach retirement and including this in your retirement plan. Many people tend to pay scant attention to their health while
they're working, especially if their employer provides good health insurance cover, but moving into retirement with a raft of current or
developing health problems is not a good idea.
If you've been putting off having a health check then now is the time to do it. If you smoke, then now is the time to give up. If you're
overweight, then now is the time to slim down. Not only is your health vital to being able to enjoy your retirement but it will become extremely
important as you get older and need to be able to secure health insurance and an affordable premium. This list could of course go on and on but
by now you've probably got the idea. One final thought though. Don't neglect your friends and family. Retirement is a time when it is all too
easy to drift away from, and lose contact with, friends and family and it is also a time in life when you may well need them more than ever.
You'll also find that as you get older it becomes increasingly difficult to make new friends. If you have been too busy to make time for your
family and friends recently then now is the time to think about changing things. Even if you are looking forward to your
retirement, which hopefully you are, it can still be a difficult time and having friends and family around you can do a great
deal to ease you through the transition.
